Luiss University – Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali founded Luiss Sports Association in 1999 and assigned Antonio Bulgheroni as first Chairman. Since 2007, Luigi Abete became Chairman of AS Luiss.
In 1998, Luiss’ sports project started off with the first basketball team, made up of students-athletes who received the four earliest athletic scholarships. Starting from the following season, the team joined the championship in the B-League and all the fifteen students-athletes of the team were awarded scholarships: it was conceived this way the first example in Italy of Dual Career among education and sports.
Basketball has been the first sport practiced in Luiss, followed by women’s volleyball and men’s soccer. In the upcoming seasons, other teams have been created, currently amounting to fifteen, for basketball, soccer, volleyball, rugby, rowing, swimming, skiing, athletics, cycling, horseback riding. Over the academic year, students-athletes can take part to several sports tournaments, for instance in the sports disciplines of golf, tennis and soccer.
In the academic year 2016/2017, through Luiss Sport Academy, students are given the twofold possibility of obtaining a managerial education alongside playing new sports disciplines. All LUISS students-athletes can enrol to Luiss Sport Program, which allows them to keep practicing their preferred sports at competitive level, while also attending a top-quality academic curriculum, with the chance of applying for sports scholarships.
Sports at Luiss, the perspectives of…
“The achievements of the last years prove the successful process of internationalization undertaken by Luiss. Over time, our Sports Association has regularly grown up, giving both to all of us and to our students huge gratifications.”
(Luigi Abete, AS Luiss Chairman)
“Sport is an extraordinary tool for personal development: it trains discipline, it educates awareness, it prepares for self-improvement. It also promotes psycho-physical wellbeing and the emergence of individual attitudes; it teaches respect for others and therefore offers opportunities to develop interpersonal skills. As such, it carries within itself a strong educational power that can translate into an effective social lever for the formation of good citizens. Luiss is aware of these advantages: it promotes the practice of sport as an example of healthy and fair competition, able to contribute to the development of the personality of students so that they can become protagonists of an integrated and efficient community.
(Andrea Prencipe, Dean Luiss University)
“Luiss Sport Academy implies sports for everyone: for regular students, for the over a thousand foreign students we host, for graduates who are still involved with our University. In this way, athletes will be supported in the practice of their sports discipline, while the others will be encouraged to engage in sports.”
(Roberto Pessi, Vice-Dean to Didactics Luiss)
“Luiss firmly believed in the sports project as vehicle for important values, remedy for evils and injustices.”
(Luigi Serra, Vice-Chairman Luiss)
“Sports are actively entering students’ university life, they promote and strengthen skills as teamwork, problem-solving, sense of responsibility, effort and commitment, increasingly critical to be competitive on the job market.”
(Giovanni Lo Storto, Luiss General Director)
