Luiss Cup 2019: Riva di Traiano is the birthplace of the University’s sailing project

  • 8 May 2019

The Luiss Cup 2019 ended with students, alumni and professors challenging each other until the last gybe. The event took place in the beautiful “Porto Turistico Riva di Traiano” – just south of Civitavecchia – and gave the go-ahead to the University’s sailing project.

Ready to go: on Friday 3rd May, after having learned basic theoretical notions in the first technical briefing, the participants gave up their moorings for a training at sea.

Saturday opened with the testimony of ocean sailor Matteo Miceli, who told the crew members about his experience in the Roma Ocean World. Miceli, in fact, was the protagonist of the solo world tour on a completely eco-sustainable boat, the Eco40 he built.

After his greeting, the participants were again instructed on the basic safety manoeuvres to be carried out at sea. Then, they took to the sea, finding favorable weather conditions despite the night storm.

The first races were fleet races, the results of which created the partial classification. Then, in the early afternoon, the match races were held, which defined the final placings.

Team 9 took the lead, consisting of Paolo Emilio Panzironi, Cristiano Costanzi, Ilaria Altamura and Michele Dalla Vedova.

On the second step of the podium Team 2 of Antonio Ferrone, Andrea Salinas, Martina Moccia, Valerio Piro and Lorenzo Migliori.

Third place for Team 6, composed of Andrea Alfonso Tedeschi, Federico Arquilla Lupi, Giorgio Ferrari and Francesca Iannini.

Upon returning to port, the crews took part in the award ceremony, which was held in the picturesque setting of the port in the presence of all sponsors and organizers of the event. A video summarising the two days was then shown, made by P&Co.
