Francesco Vescio, a goalkeeper with 110 cum laude: “The Lazio Cup is the sweetest memory, waiting for more trophies”.
The many confirmations of this second season in the Promotion of Luiss Football stands out that of Francesco Vescio. The goalkeeper from San Martino in Pensilis, formerly Olympia Agnonese, is in his third season in the Luissina jacket. Excellent between the posts as well as in his university career, he now speaks as a veteran of the locker room. We interviewed him to understand the risks of the insidious trip on Sunday, but also to tell us about the arrival of Guglielmo Stendardo in the team and to try to imagine how it will end this season.
Impeccable in the field as well as in academic life, you have obtained a three-year degree with 110 cum laude and now frequent the first year of Administration, Finance and Control. How did you manage to combine sports and academic experience?
Commitment, organisation and a sense of responsibility are at the heart of everything. I try to do my best on both fronts, making the most of the tools that Luiss offers its students. In my opinion, practicing sport also helps in teaching: it is an outlet valve, an opportunity to meet other students who can stimulate, support and offer you useful ideas and advice. Moreover, if there is passion, everything becomes easier.
Despite the fact that you are 22 years old and a veteran of the team, what do you remember most?
Of course, the victory of the Lazio Cup that made us reach the Promotion: arrived at the end of my first year, was the crowning achievement of the great work done by the team, technical staff and management. The other lads and I have shown that it’s possible to achieve both sporting and academic results at the same time. We also realised how satisfying it is to complete a course and achieve the best result. Winning with the “Luiss family” is incredible, I hope with all my heart that it will be resumed as soon as possible.
The team is going through a great moment of form and on Sunday there will be the insidious trip to Latina. How are you preparing for this match?
Matches like Sunday’s are the most difficult from a mental point of view. We must not underestimate our opponents. We have to keep in mind a trivial but absolutely valid concept: against the first or last in the standings, each victory is worth 3 points. Concentration, the desire to win and the ability to give the right weight to each action will be fundamental. I remain confident, but I don’t forget that danger is always around the corner.
Luiss Calcio in the January market has placed the shot from ninety: Guglielmo Stendardo. How much security does it give, especially to you who are the goalkeeper, to have a monument like him to lead the defense?
His presence is fundamental, it gives us enormous security. Before being a great player he’s a great person. He’s been in reality in a very short time: he’s professional, available, open to dialogue. He cares about the growth of everyone, we are really lucky to have him with us. And then, who more than a former Serie A footballer who has become a lawyer shows that study and sport can be cultivated at the same time?
Finally, what do you expect from this season finale?
I expect each of us to try to be the added value for the team, that the enthusiasm that has accompanied us since August will not fade and that we will try with all our might to win the last games. If all this happens, the results won’t be long in coming.
