Andrea Rosalba, cards in hand and bachelor wreath on head
Professional bridge player Andrea Rosalba is one of our Top Athletes. Born in 1996, Andrea has recently graduated in Business Management and, for the occasion, he revealed us how study and game are, according to him, closely connected.
Andrea, what similarities are there between bridge and business management?
In bridge, just as in business management, it is necessary to have an overall view of all the variables in the field. An essential feature is the initial planning of the actions to be taken. This is fundamental in order to reach the objective that has been set: the contract, in bridge language. Certainly, it is very useful to study the opponents to recognize their strengths and vulnerabilities. In business management, analysis of the external environment and stakeholders is also crucial. It is also important not to be conditioned by adverse events that can undermine what you have worked so hard for.
Do you think being a bridge champion can be an asset in a job interview?
It depends on the interviewer. Let me explain: abroad, especially in China, playing bridge is considered a real skill in the selection process. This is because my discipline is much more deeply rooted and practiced there, especially among young people. If the person with whom the interview is carried out knows the brigde, automatically has the proof that the candidate possesses a series of connected abilities. For example, problem solving, decision-making skills, goal-oriented mentality, ability to analyze and method, organization. The latter, are more developed the higher his level in the game.
What are now your plans for the future?
A chapter of my life has closed, the one related to the university period. Obviously, however, there is always the need to continue studying to improve. Finally, I will be able to dedicate my knowledge and energy to achieving goals I can be proud of in a few years. My medium-term plans are to be fulfilled from a professional point of view, without neglecting my passion for bridge. I still have many championships to play and the goal remains to bring home more success and recognition.
What advice would you give a freshman starting out as a student-athlete?
I would tell them to always stay focused on their goals because organization makes all the difference. Setting priorities and planning your activities in a way that doesn’t waste energy allows you to always give your best and have no regrets. I believe that any goal can be achieved, if at the base there are determination and awareness that nothing is impossible.
We thank Andrea Rosalba, to whom we offer many congratulations and a big good luck.
