  • 9 October 2020

We have already met some of the new Luiss Top Athletes. From soccer to rugby, fencing, rowing and karate, there are many sports represented by the new University’s student athletes. But the new faces in AS Luiss family are not over. In fact, there are still many successful athletes to present, among those who have chosen to undertake the Dual Career path. Today is the turn of Davide Di Veroli, Luca Mazzitelli and Giorgio Malan. Three different profiles but with the same love for sport and a great desire to enrich themselves through study. Word to them.

Winner of the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018 and the Under 20 World Cup in 2019, Davide Di Veroli is one of the most upcoming young men of Italian fencing. The new Top Athlete of the Athenaeum has many passions and a marked maturity, despite being just nineteen years old. This year he will start the three-year degree class in Economics and Management, a choice taken by a precise vision of his future: “A year ago I joined the Gruppo Sportivo Fiamme Oro and I would like, once my sporting career is over, to stay in the Corps and become an officer in the Police”.

A determination that he is ready to apply also in the academic path: “Being usefull to having goals in sport leads me to translate them into the study. I want to finish my university career in the best possible way. I am very honored to be part of the AS Luiss project, which involves so many great champions. I am aware that I will have to give all my best and I will work hard for this.

Sport aside, his main passion is dance: “Especially classical dance, which until last year I practiced easily, because I attended the Liceo Coreutico. Now it’s a bit more complicated, but I want to continue it”. The other great love of Davide, a great fan of Valentino Rossi, are motor sports: “A passion that I have to keep with caution, because I have to be careful not to get hurt. I could suffer injuries that would damage my career. I cuddle my bike, every now and then I take a ride, but with great caution”.

From a seriousness like that, you can expect great results.

Luca Mazzitelli

Midfielder born 1995, Luca Mazzitelli has almost 50 appearances in A. After his experiences with Genoa and Sassuolo, he finished the last championship at Virtus Entella, before going on loan to Pisa.

With the Tuscans he has already made his debut in the championship and Italian Cup: “We started strong, with one victory and two draws. I joined a nice group and I was very well received”. The changes, however, do not stop at the field, because this year will begin his university career: “I chose the Faculty of Political Sciences because it guarantees me the right mix of legal and economic subjects. I believe that this course can give me a complete preparation”.

It is not surprising that these are the reasons for his decision. Luca, in fact, is very attentive to current events: “I like to be informed and understand what happens in the world. About joining  AS Luiss, our Top Athlete says: “It is really exciting to be part of this family and of a prestigious Athenaeum. Also, as a born in Roma, I am proud to represent a University in my city. I can’t wait to get started”. The study can also be “a release valve” and allow him to “take mental energies out of the field”.

Aware of the commitment required by Dual Career, he is ready to take advantage of what he learned during his football career: “Sport teaches you to stay within a group, to respect the rules, to love competition, not to get down in negative moments and not to get excited in positive ones. All qualities that serve to remain focused even when preparing for an exam”.

Come on Luca, we are rooting for you.

Giorgio Malan

Giorgio Malan‘s ability to devote himself with commitment to the double path sports-academic is not surprising. In fact, we are talking about the rising star of the Italian pentathlon, therefore an athlete accustomed to face five different disciplines every day. And he does it with enormous talent, as demonstrated by the gold medal at the European Youth in Drzonkow, won in 2018, and the silver medal at the International Budapest Indoor Senior in 2019.

In Luiss he will study Economics and Management, driven by his innate curiosity, resourcefulness and love for challenges: “Dual Career fascinates me a lot and is an extraordinary possibility. I was really impressed by the Athenaeum’s sports program and I can’t wait to find out from the inside”. A program that involves many illustrious colleagues: “I’m really happy to be part of this group of champions. The presence of athletes of this importance confirms that this is a very valid project”.

He also relies on the experiences on the platform, pool and field as a source of teachings: “Sport is a school of life, especially mine which is so mixed. It prepares you to face all challenges with seriousness and concentration.”

Giorgio, good luck!
