Who We Are – Vision and Mission
The Luiss Sports Association (AS Luiss) was founded in 1999 by Luiss University with the aim of encouraging students to engage in sports and to promote values such as socialization, respect for rules, and fair play through sport.
Over the years, the AS Luiss audience has expanded: its attention now extends not only to student-athletes but also to those interested in non-competitive sports. Through the organization of courses, sports schools, and numerous partnerships with gyms and clubs, AS Luiss offers the opportunity to Alumni, Faculty Members, and Administrative Staff to benefit from its sports activities.
The President of AS Luiss is Luigi Abete.
Vision
To spread sporting activity within the University contaminating the academic world to use sport as a vehicle of psychophysical well-being for all students, transferring the ethical and moral values proper to sport.
Mission
To promote sports activities both within and outside the Luiss community through the organization of teams, sports schools, events, training courses, and research activities, all aimed at encouraging healthy lifestyles and creating moments of sharing among students and Luiss stakeholders.
Goals
The goals of the Luiss Sports Association are:
- To promote sports among students, using movement as a powerful tool for physical and mental well-being.
- To support and guide different categories of student-athletes through the Luiss sports program, promoting Dual Careers and sports for all.
- To foster processes of socialization, integration, and well-being inside and outside the University through sports.
- To develop innovative projects aimed at improving performance.
- To inspire other universities to create projects linked to the world of sport.
Our History
1998 – Luiss University’s sports project takes shape with the creation of the first basketball team, made up entirely of student-athletes. The first 4 sports merit scholarships are awarded.
1999 – Luiss University officially establishes AS Luiss, and Antonio Bulgheroni becomes its first President. The basketball team participates in the Serie B championship, and 15 scholarships are awarded. Today, the President is Luigi Abete.
2000 – Football, rugby, and volleyball teams are formed. Today, AS Luiss boasts 20 teams across 13 different sports.
2013 – The “Luiss Sport for All” project is launched, giving all Luiss students the chance to practice non-competitive sports through our sports schools (bridge, rowing, sport dance, golf, swimming, personal training, chess, tennis, yoga) or at partner clubs.
2015 – The “Luiss Sport Academy” is established by the Academic Senate of Luiss Guido Carli University to support the Dual Career model and help national and international athletes pursue both academic and athletic success.
2018 – The Luiss Sport Lab “Gianni Delfini” is founded. It is a research center focused on performance development and enhancement, operating in the university sports sector and extending its model to the corporate world through cognitive-functional assessments and scientific research to improve both individual and team performance.
2019 – AS Luiss forms the core team of the Italian National University Basketball Team for the Naples Universiade.
2023 – Luiss Basket finishes the regular season at the top of the table and qualifies for the playoffs for promotion to Serie A2.
June 18, 2023 – Luiss Basket secures promotion to Serie A2 by winning the Final Four in Ferrara, defeating Rieti (65-69), Vigevano (86-94), and Orzinuovi (79-78).
2024 – AS Luiss competes in the National B1 Basketball Championship, in the Eccellenza Football Championship, and in the Serie C Volleyball (Men’s and Women’s) and Rugby Championships.
It also participates in federated sports activities in Athletics, Rowing, Cycling, Golf, Swimming, Padel, Skiing, Tennis, and Sailing. Finally, it runs competitive youth activities with the Junior Football team.
