From soccer field to finance: the story of Alessio Caruso, former Luiss player

  • 17 December 2021

Alessio Caruso began his adventure as a student-athlete almost as a joke. Yet, of the two years in which he wore the Luiss soccer jersey, he retains memorable memories. After graduation, he launched a brilliant working career and went from being an offensive midfielder to a financial professional.

Alessio, can you tell us about your history on the Luiss Calcio team?

Initially, I was informed about the selection process, but in my indecision I gave up. The second year I came back more convinced, I tried out and became part of the team. The coach asked me where I had been the previous year, I replied that it was Leo Cisotta’s fault. I played as a midfielder, then over time I moved to the forwards.

What is the best memory from your years as a student-athlete?

Definitely, winning the college championship. During my first year we lost in the finals, while in my second year we managed to win. We were a super tight-knit group that stayed together for the sake of being together. The university tournament of that time is not comparable to the championship played today, but even in those days the players were of a very high level.

In your CV you have indicated that you are a former soccer player: have you been asked about this in any interview?

Unfortunately, I must say that in the interviews I was never asked. Maybe just a few jokes at the beginning, but then over time work experience prevails and extra curricular activities do not jump out at you. At least in the world of finance. It’s funny, because I’ve noticed a great correlation between the people who do my job and their passion for sports.

Have you met any of your former teammates during your professional career?

I would say no: only once, during due diligence, did I notice the name of a former teammate on a long mailing list.

What is your approach to the firm?

In reality, studying is not antithetical to sport, quite the contrary. I believe that, especially during university life, it helps to have balance and dedication. On the one hand, it dictates your time for other activities, and on the other hand it helps you network a lot and see the University as a well-rounded place.

Advice for current student-athletes?

Have fun: it may sound rhetorical, but it’s the truth. Although obviously today’s players have the opportunity to play in a much more compelling league that involves more commitment and stress. The important thing, however, is not to lose sight of the fact that this is a great opportunity to play sports at a competitive level, while laying the groundwork for a future career.
